Alexa is great tool for webmasters and a sister company of Amazon.com. The Alexa ranking are based on different criteria. Possibly these rank are not very useful for normal web surfers. Most webmasters installs its ranking bottoms and banners to their website to improve their Alexa ranking.
I have also installed a rank button on this blog, probably you have noticed the button in the footer area. Yesterday, I have removed the button and uninstalled some plugins to test the SEO effect on NetRival. The three major changes are: remove Socialize plugin, Alexa Button and si-captcha for comments.
1. Socialize Plugin:
Although it is a great plugin and very easy to customize I have removed this plugin because I felt that their no need to add more than the two most popular bottoms (Facebook Like and Tweet). since in two month no other buttons are used, So I have installed Facebook like and tweet buttons manually to the post (See the top-right of the post). Socialize has one css style sheet other than style.css of the theme, hence it will improve site performance.
2. Alexa Buttons and Banners:
Their is no need to improve some rank in Alexa on the cost of Google ranking and user experiance. one should not compromise with page load time. So, I have decided to remove the button. I have also written Why Alexa is avoidable?
Update: Added Alexa button as in 125×125 px ad zone with least priority to maintain current ranking.
Although this plugin is not disabled completely but disabled for comments. This feature is still enabled for login and signup. I did this to improve site engagement with my visitors. And if you still stuck with SEO. I have some reason for you also: The SI captcha generates an image which was loosy and increase page load time due to some extra database calls and captcha-image.
I am also testing Defensio, this is another reason to do so. Probably I have invited spammers to come on my site by disabling this, But it will help me in testing Defensio. After making some initial tests I will share my experience about Defensio.
This is the reason I have not uninstalled this plugin completely. I will reactivate this plugin if defensio will not work perfectly. Till now I can say it is detecting 90% of spams.
Their are some more small changes I have made which are un-noticeable. Like I have changed the popular posts plugin and uninstalled wp-minify, since their was some problem since last update. (Another test item, WordPress without wp-minify)
Wow, I have reduced my page load time by 2.23 second (30%) 🙂 which is really great! And if you have installed any un-necessary plugins that are not useful for you try to disable or uninstall. Installed plugins can reduce your site performance. No one should compromise with SEO.
