It is practically not possible to install Photoshop for editing your family photo and the latest version of Photoshop is in GB. So, installing Photoshop will also slow down your PC. Beside this Photo Shop is too expansive to buy. I am not a Photoshop user but tried some times, I can say Photoshop is not an easy application for me. It may be best for photographers and graphic designer. But I will still stuck for Picasa and GIMP for my daily use.
GIMP is easy to use tool if you try to understand it or if you have used Photoshop then the function of the GIMP is nothing to worry about, you will be easily mastered in this. However their is a big tutorial and help is available in PDF and HTML format.
If you have any problem regarding GIMP then IRC Chat is available for help. For better experience you may use IRC chat client like ICEchat.
