Google is the best search engine since forever. Most Internet user makes a lot of query daily. You may be also be one of them. We spend a lot of time in search of appropriate results and sites. But rarely people uses some tricks to refine their search using different methods. I will share some of the best tricks probably you don’t know.
Use of Square Brackets ():
Square brackets enables you to refine your search and it enables you search the exact phrase and it will be searched as a single query. The whole words will be considered as a single query.
Use of Double Quotes (“”):
Putting double quotes will enable you to search exact phrase in exact order. like if you will search “kumar anand” the result will be different from “anand kumar” both have two keywords “anand” and “kumar”. look the images below, the result may be totally different. In the 1st example my personal blog anandkumar.in is not listed if i make query for “kumar anand” but if i search for “anand kumar” my blog’s position is 2.
Use of plus sign (+):
Adding a plus sign before a keyword has similar effect as double quotes (“”)
Using Plus Sign (+) is now retired from refining Search results. Because the sign is being used in Google+. You should replace + sign with double quotes.
Use of minus sign (-):
If you want to exclude something use dash or minus sign before keyword. here is a example for Adolf Hitler and Adolf -Hitler. see the images:
The above image is for Adolf hitler but when I searched for Adolf -Hitler (Adolf but not Hitler) I got the following result. So I think it is the most important trick, which may be very useful for you also.
Use of star (*):
The star represent for wildcard search. Probably another useful feature if you want to explore something on google. Google will consider some missing keyword and show some refined result.
Use of “OR” operator:
OR operator is another useful to enhance your search query. if you wish to get some data and confused about the two or more keyword than try OR (both O and R should be in capital letter).
Site specific (site:):
Site specific search is another good way to refine your search and strict to a particular site. this will strict to particular domain and will not search the whole web.
e.g. If you search for “www.netrival.com WordPress” their will be two keywords first is www.netrival.com and second will be WordPress. who will show all results that will contain both keyword. But if you will search for “site:www.netrival.com wordpress” their will be only one keyword “WordPress” and the result will be only from site www.netrival.com.
Specify Date Range:
You can specify the date range by simply adjusting the date range on the left toolbar of google search result. Probably this is the most used tool by me. This is very important tool to short the best relevant result. Suppose I am in search of some WordPress plugin. that what will be the use of a WordPress 2.x plugin. Or I am search ing for something like when was the last election occurred I should limit the result for past 5 years. Otherwise each election will be considered.
These are some simple tricks, which will definitely improve your search results.
