TRAI (Telecom Regulatory of India) has introduced new registry to stay away from unwanted calls and SMS. The new version of DND is more powerful and more customizable. The old portal of DND is also retired and a new portal nccptrai.gov.in is now functioning to help both customers and telemarketers.
In this post I will share some quick tip about activation, deactivation or changing preference in NCPR registry (Updated DND registry).
NCPR stands for “National Consumer Preference Register” which allows users to to customise their old preference. Previously in DND we have only option to choose or not to choose DND (Do not disturb). In NCPR the preference is divided in two major preferences. The fist one allows to block all promotional calls and sms from any telemarketer. Whereas the second option blocks all calls but we can set preference to receive some type of promotional sms, we will discuss this later.
How to Register in NCPR and block all calls and SMS:
The process is simple and also known as Fully Blocked Category. You may call toll-free number 1909 and follow the voice instructions or write “START 0” in your message box and send it to 1909.
How to Set Preference to Block all calls and receive some SMS:
This is also called Partially Blocked Category. In this category all calls will be blocked but we may set our preference to receive sms of certain category of product or service.
There are 7 sub-category as mentioned below:
- Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards,
- Real Estate,
- Consumer goods and automobiles,
- Tourism and Leisure.
You may send SMS like “STOP 3” to receive promotional SMS about Education, if you have fully block all the categories. Or if you want to stop sms about Real Estate, just send “START 2” to 1909.
Multiple Category Preference:
If you want to register or de-register for multiple categories, separate your categories by a comma. e.g. Send “Stop 1, 3, 6” and send to 1909. Same method can be used to stop receiving promotional sms from multiple categories. e.g. send “START 3, 5” to 1909.
Please note If you have already registered in the old DND registry, You are now in “Fully Blocked Category”. Consider to set your preference to receive some SMS for your choice of category, if you wish.
It is also important to know costumer will not receive any calls from any telemarketer since partially blocked category allows SMS only. Also changing preference is allowed only in 3 months of last change or registration. Correction is allowed in 24hrs of changing preference or registration.
How to De-register from NCPR:
If you want to receive all telemarketing calls and SMS you may also de-register your phone or mobile number by sending an sms or call. To send SMS write “STOP” and send it to 1909.
How lo lodge a complaint:
If you are are registered in NCPR for more than 7 days and you still got SMS or call, complaining is also simple. Send an sms in given format or call 1909 and follow the instructions.
Send SMS in COMP TEL NO XXXXXXXXXX, dd/mm/yy, Time hh:mm format. Where XXXXXXXXXX is the number from which you receive the call or sms and dd/mm/yy is the date on which you got the call or sms.
Telemarketing calls and SMS are banned from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM (Indian Time). If you got any promotional calls either you are registered or not, you may complaint the number using same procedure.
