[NOTE: As on February 22, 2015 this blog has roamed to Hostgator, Known host, Linode. It is now on Digital Ocean.]
[February 5th, 2011] Now, I have one month experience with Dreamhost shared hosting. It’s good idea to share my experience with them. Isn’t it?
Digital Inspiration is one of my favorite blog about technology and I visit this blog regularly. I chose Dreamhost because Digital Inspiration is also hosted on Dreamhost. I have never seen the blog down except one in past 2 years. Definitely Amit Agrawal may say more about his blog. By the way, the first idea came from here. Than I have tried to search about Dreamhost service. I found a lot of positive comments about HostGator and some for Blue Host. There are mixed reviews on web about Dreamhost.
After reading the reviews and Amit’s comments I finally selected 3 Web-hosts Dreamhost, Blue Host and HostGator to choose the best. The pricing of these three webhosts were almost similar. When it comes to support I have seen that Dreamhost is more reliable since their terms and condition are readable and easy to understand. I finally selected Dreamhost and started chat for my account up-gradation, which was an affiliate account that time.
I made a chat session with sales team of Dreamhost; they assured me that I can use a promo code for discount for first year billing and used a code provided by shutmeloud.com. The code was worth $97 off. But Dreamhost allowed my only $50 since I belong to India. It was really shocking for me. They have never mentioned such thing anywhere on their site. By the way I wished to continue the relation and started the installations and the developments. Though, I have installed WordPress on my laptop using “XAMPP for windows” which helped me a lot to develop netival.com. After a week I made the payment which was $69.40 for first year.
Soon I had made a lot or trials and customization with WordPress, Media wiki and PHPbb3. I used a lot of tools to check my server’s ping time, uptime and a lot more. I found that there are enough resources to run a WordPress blog. It is about 20 days to launch of netrival.com.
But, there was unannounced outage for 9 hours last week. Dreamhost added $9.95 to my account due to unannounced network outage, which will be adjusted in next billing cycle or any up gradations. This was enough for now, but definitely not for live sites who have a lot of traffic. They will lose a lot hits and ranking also.
There are 3 times downtime I seen with the server in past one month. First was about 9 hrs. 30 minutes as mentioned above, second was 13 minute outage yesterday, third was 23 minutes today. Yes, It is enough. But its only a month. I hope there will be no more downtime further.
After all the experience i will give 7 star out of 10 to Dreamhost and still happy with them. Dreamhost should clearly mention their terms and conditions about discount coupon on their T&C page and should decrease network outage. I am still testing Dreamhost and have option for refund for 67 days more.
