Some day ago I have written “Why Google Adsense has no alternative?“. In this topic I will discuss the new Google service called Google Voice. This service actually not launched recently but new to India. Since Indian Government has banned VOIP services in India and asked Google to stop such service, probably you have seen such news but a lot of people (including me) are in favour of VOIP. It is not a brilliant idea to block technology and its development. VOIP has potential for another Telecom revolution.
What is VOIP: VOIP (Voice over internet protocol) is a service who carries voice in digital form and transmitted to the receiver over internet. Skype, Yahoo messenger, Google Voice are some famous platforms who are providing such services.
What Google did and doing: Google has acquired GrandCentral and launched its “Voice” service in March 2009. Google Voice is currently offering free calls to USA and Canada. The service is limited to USA and Canada but there are a lot of tutorials available “How to activate Google Voice from outside USA“.
Calls to USA and Canada is totally free. This is the reason why Google voice is in great demand from outside USA. In 2010 Google acquired Gizmo5 to offer desktop and smart-phone applications.
The only thing required is fast internet connection to use the service. The growth of reach to internet is very high, so Google is working on this project very cleverly. They have still not stopped their services in India (at least not blocked). The cost of VOIP calls is nothing in comparative to Phone calls made by mobile or landline using other platform. A voip service provider do not have to pay anything for spectrum or telecom license including hardwares. This is the reason google has so much interest in VOIP. On other hand telecom operators have to pay a huge amount to get spectrum licences and can not cut call rates a lot.
If you live in USA you can port your number to Google in only $20. One more step to rival telcos! So I can say that, in recent future we will have an Android phone and using Google Voice to make calls. Google voice will be universal platform for making calls.
